Volnay is one of the famous appellations in the Cote de Beaune and is located just above Pommard. The soils of this appellation are middle Jurassic brown clay-and-limestone and provide supple and elegant wines which are reputed as being very feminine. Several hypotheses exist as far as the etymology of the ”Les Santenots” vineyard name is concerned. It could come from the Latin term SENTES meaning ”brambles” or ”thorny bushes”, a hypothesis that is corroborated by the names of several surrounding vineyards which refer to various terms related to the clearing of land. Or, it could have the same origin as the name of the village of Santenay which comes from the Gaulish word SENTU
(path), an allusion to the paths in this area that led down to Auxey-Duresses and the Roman road.
