Wine Advocate 91 points - Produced as a homage to legendary winemaker Raul de la Mota, the 2011 Kinien de Don Raul is a barrel selection of the best found from the winery in 2011. The best ended up being a blend of 64% Malbec, 14% Petit Verdot, 12% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Syrah that aged for one year in new barriques and a further six months in used ones after the blend was done. At this point in time the nose comes through as dominated by oak aromas, spices, smoke and cured meat, and it’s not easy to reach the core of ripe black fruit that is more noticeable in the palate, though the sweet spices and charred oak flavors take the lead there too. It’s a powerful, well-oaked, international-style red blend that will need a good couple of years to try to integrate all that oak. For fans of the style. 8,000 bottles.
